Forbidden Music
Program
From Five Pieces for String Quartet by Erwin Schulhoff (1894 – 1942)
From String Quartet No. 2, Op.26 by Erich Korngold (1897 – 1957)
String Quartet No 5 by Walter Kaufmann (1907 – 1984) (Canadian Premiere)
String Quartet K.575 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)
In this program, thoughtfully curated by concertmaster Joe Lanza and narrated by our friend, CBC’s Tom Allen, the London Symphonia String Quartet performs works by Walter Kaufmann, Erich Korngold, and Erwin Schulhoff, composers whose works were banned during the Third Reich.
Of the millions of Europeans displaced or killed by war and politics in 20th-century Europe, thousands, many of whom were artists, eventually found their way to Canada.
Among them was Walter Kaufmann, composer and conductor, who fled Germany in 1934 to become the first music director of the Winnipeg Symphony in 1948. Kaufmann gave the score of his String Quartet No. 5 to Sam Medzon, principal violist in Kaufmann’s Winnipeg Symphony during his tenure. It was subsequently rediscovered in 2019 by Serenata Music’s Ted Medzon. We are proud to perform its Canadian premiere!
